June 26, 2005:
The Community Theatre of Greensboro and McDonald's crowned the first TRIAD IDOLs at 12:35 am this morning at War Memorial Auditorium!

More than 1500 fans packed War Memorial Auditorium at the Greensboro Coliseum to cheer on and vote for the 40 finalists! And what a show they saw! Not only did each finalist perform individually—to cheers, tremendous clapping and even standing ovations—most also performed in group numbers, singing songs from famous Broadway musicals to underscore CTG's commitment to bringing top-rate musical theatre to the community.

In the 8-15-year-old category:

In the 16-and-older category:

Both CaRee and Freddy, our first TRIAD IDOLs, will be quite visible over the weeks and months to come, as they take on cameo roles in CTG's upcoming production of FOOTLOOSE, sign on with Marilyn's Talent Agency, and work (under contract) with The Barn Dinner Theatre...and that's just for starters!

June 22, 2005:
June 25 is an important date in the history of Triad music! That's when the Community Theatre of Greensboro and McDonald's will announce the first-ever TRIAD IDOLs! Be  in your seat at War Memorial Auditorium at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex by 7 pm on Saturday, June 25—you won't want to miss one note of the Final Event.

For our 40 TRIAD IDOL finalists, every minute brings them closer to their last performance in this competition. Each finalist (20 in the 8-15-year-old category and 20 in the 16-and-older category) will sing one song individually, and most will also participate in a group performance (singing a real Broadway showtune).  War Memorial Auditorium seats more than 2,000 people and has a huge stage, so this will be quite a thrilling night for all the finalists and their fans!

As they did in the semi-final events, audience members may participate as the "final judge" for the Final Event—your votes ($1/vote) will help determine the first TRIAD IDOLs! You may vote as often as you like—and for as many contestants as you like—during both intermissions. At the end of the second intermission, we will tabulate all the audience votes for each contestant and assign those votes a numeric score (similar to how the onstage judges rate the contestants). We will then add that audience score to the onstage judges' scores to determine the TRIAD IDOL and runners-up in each category.

General admission tickets to the TRIAD IDOL Final Event are $10/each, but if you bring the coupon from the TRIAD IDOL ad that appeared in GO TRIAD on June 16 or June 23, you'll get in for only $5! (Gold circle seats are $25.) Audience members will have the opportunity to win some great door prizes—including a pair of tickets to American Idols Live! Tour 2005 on July 17 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

We'll see you there!

June 6, 2005:

What a whirlwind weekend! TRIAD IDOL's semi-final events were thrilling, with 49 contestants performing in the 16-and-older age category on Saturday evening, June 4, and 53 performing in the 8-15-year-old age category on Sunday afternoon, June 5. All the judges—including the audience, who counted as the "fifth judge" for both events—had an incredibly difficult task. They were charged with moving 20 contestants forward to the Final Event in each category!

With the amount of talent on the stage at the UNCG School of Music concert hall, that was nearly impossible. But we were able to announce the finalists in each category at the end of the respective events. Click here to see the list of finalists in each category and the songs they sang. And stay tuned for more information on each finalist over the next few days!

See the younger finalists' pictures here.     See the older finalists' pictures here.

June 2, 2005:
With TRIAD IDOL's semi-final round coming up this weekend at the UNCG School of Music, CTG Executive Director Mitchel Sommers is featured in the June 2 edition of GO TRIAD. In an "Off the Cuff" column, Mitchel describes how TRIAD IDOL has opened up new opportunities for so many talented performers—many of whom have never performed outside their schools or churches before. Be sure to come out to the semi-final events on June 4 and 5.   We are inviting audience members to participate as the "final judge" in the semi-finals—your votes will help determine the 20 people (in each category) who will move forward to TRIAD IDOL’s Final Event on June 25 at War Memorial Auditorium. During both intermissions of each semi-final event, you will have the opportunity to vote ($1/vote) for your favorite semi-finalists. You may vote as often as you like! At the end of the second intermission, we will tabulate all the audience votes for each contestant and assign those votes a numeric score (similar to how the onstage judges will rate the contestants). We will then add that audience score to the rest of the judges’ scores to determine the 20 finalists who will be moving forward in each category. (We will have 40 finalists in total performing at the Final Event.)

May 16, 2005: Nearly 1000 people in two age categories—8 through 15 & 16 and older—performed in the TRIAD IDOL first-round auditions over the weekend of May 14-15, 2005! Several hundred are moving ahead to the quarter-final round at the Odeon Theatre at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex on May 21 (16 and older) and May 22 (8-15 years old). To read about some of the contestants, click here.

New contestants may not enter the competition at this time.

The Grand Prize in each age group includes $1,000 cash, a contract with a local talent agency, and other exciting items.

TRIAD IDOL contestants will perform in three more rounds of auditions leading up to the selection of the winners. In both the semi-final and final events, the audience will serve as the "5th judge" and will be instrumental in choosing those who move ahead. The competition will culminate in the crowning of the first-ever Triad Idols in each age category on the stage of War Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, June 25, 2005. Check the events calendar for a complete listing of all TRIAD IDOL dates and times.

Our sponsors have made all of this possible. Please click their logos below to learn more about them.

Please contact the Community Theatre of Greensboro at 336-333-7470 with any questions about TRIAD IDOL.

Some of our TRIAD IDOL contestants performed songs that they had written themselves at the first-round auditions and the quarter-finals. One quarter-finalist, Tracy Brumbeloe, a substitute teacher for Forsyth County Schools, wrote a song called "I Have a Dream" after her son was given an assignment on South African apartheid. She connected the oppression of South Africans to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's 1963 speech with its famous theme of "I Have a Dream," and the song—both lyrics and melody—just came to her. Click here to read the lyrics of Tracy's song.

In a special column for the May 12th edition of GO TRIAD, Allison King, a local award-winning singer, explores the wacky world of TRIAD IDOL as the competition gets underway with auditions at three area malls. Click here to get Allison's perspective!

To promote TRIAD IDOL, the Community Theatre of Greensboro hosted Diana DeGarmo on Saturday, May 7, at The Art Shop in Greensboro. Diana, who was runner-up to Fantasia in the third season of American Idol, chatted with guests, signed autographs, and sang a few selections from Blue Skies, her debut album.
